We’re excited to announce that Redcatch Community Garden has been commissioned to deliver a one-year project focused on food and nature with and for Disabled people. This initiative is part of the Climate and Disability strand of the Community Climate Action Project, funded by The National Lottery. This will take place from October 2024 - October 2025.

Supporting Communities to Lead Climate Action

The Community Climate Action Project is an ambitious citywide programme funded by the National Lottery’s Climate Action Fund. It showcases how community-led action can help Bristol meet its climate and nature goals while also improving people’s quality of life.

About Our Project

This project will help champion the food and nature priorities set by Bristol’s community of Disabled people in their Community Climate Action Plan. It’s a key element of the Climate and Disability programme, which supports Bristol’s commitment to a just transition by ensuring that Disabled people are at the heart of local climate action.

Our project will focus on:

🌱 Creating accessible raised beds for growing food.
👨‍🍳 Running gardening and cookery sessions for Disabled people.
🥗 Distributing homegrown, home-cooked meals to increase food security.
🌿 Planting air-purifying plants to improve air quality.
🤝 Engaging Disabled people in green spaces and local climate action

Why This Matters

By making food growing and nature more accessible, this project will support Disabled people’s wellbeing, promote food security and contribute to a healthier local environment.

“This project is an incredible opportunity to bring our community closer together through food and nature, empowering Disabled people to engage fully with our garden. We’re excited to create a space where everyone can contribute, learn new skills, and be part of something that positively impacts both our local environment and the wellbeing of our community.”

– Kate Swain, CEO, Redcatch Community Garden

“Food and nature are really important for bringing a community together and into work around climate change, but Disabled people are often locked out of these areas. The project brings to life lots of the ambitions that were in our community climate action plan, and I’m excited to see what Redcatch Community Garden does with it.”

– Emma Geen, Climate and Disability Programme Associate, Bristol Climate & Nature Partnership

Bristol’s Community Climate Action Plans

A key part of this project is the co-production of community climate action plans, developed through inclusive, accessible climate conversations. These plans address both social and climate priorities, ensuring that communities facing inequality and disadvantage—including Disabled people and refugees—have a voice in shaping the city’s climate response.

Supported by the Bristol Climate & Nature Partnership, Bristol City Council and the Centre for Sustainable Energy, local organisations hosted discussions on key climate themes, including:

🚶‍♂️ Transport
💡 Energy
🍽️ Food
🗑️ Waste
🌳 Nature
🏡 Buildings
💼 Jobs & Economy
⚖️ Inequality

These conversations informed the Community Climate Action Plans, ensuring Bristol’s diverse communities are represented in the city’s climate strategy.
